Tips for helping baby to sleep
Every baby sleeps differently, and their sleeping pattern changes as they grow. It is completely normal for babies to wake through the night in the first few months. Each baby is different and what may work for one family may not work for another, so I have put together some helpful tips to help when it comes to bedtime and sleeping.
Consistency is key in bedtime routines
Starting some kind of bedtime routine from an early age can help baby recognise when it is time to wind down. At first its ok if its not overly structured. As your little one grows you can add in more steps and stick to a schedule. But when babies are still small, I would start with the basics. Bath, feed and sleep. Whether that’s rocking them to sleep or putting them down to sleep, do what works for you and what you feel comfortable with. As they grow you can add in baby massages, story time or anything else you would like. But start small and stay consistent.
Look for sleeping cues
Looking out for early sleeping cues will help you put baby to sleep before they get over tired and irritated. Look for signs such as yawning, rubbing eyes, fussiness, slower movements and looking away. By catching these signs early, it can make bedtime much easier.
Day and nighttime awareness
When Babies are born, they do not recognise the difference between day and night. By doing these simple things you can help babies to learn the difference. During the daytime make sure there is lots of natural light, open curtains and blinds and make sure rooms are well lit. (This also helps if baby has jaundice). Encourage daytime feeding and playtimes and keep it engaging.
Remember to be flexible
Sometimes you hit a bump in the road. A sleep regression, teething or a growth spurt. Although this can be challenging, and you may need to allow more patience than usual. Stick with your routine it will pass and you will be back on track to a sleeping baby.
