Let's be honest, if you've ever had a baby who loves their dummy then you already know the choas. One minute it's in their mouth, next minute it's on the floor, or under the sofa, or it's under your car seat.
So naturally, as a human, we all think "Right, I'm getting a dummy clip. Job done."
But here's the thing that hardly anyone realises...
The biggest mistake parents make when buying dummy/pacifier clips is choosing them simple because 'they look cute'.
I get it.
I've done it myself.
We all love a pretty colour or something that matches your little one's outfit.
But what most parents don't see is how many dummy clips out there are... well... let's just say not something you would want anywhere near your baby's mouth!
Why this happens
Because as you know, the internet is full of gorgeous photos.
Perfect lighting.
Perfect beads.
Perfect baby models.
Meanwhile, behind the scenes, some of those clips wouldn't even survive for five seconds in a proper safety test.
And the thing is, no one will tel you that.
When you become a parent, you get handed a little human, a pack of nappies and vibes.
No manual. No guidance. And for sure nothing about dummy clip safety standards.
The safety part no one talks about
In the UK and EU there's an actual safety regulation (BS EN 12586). Most parents have no clue about this (we didn't before we started Newly Born)
It covers boring but important things like:
- How long the clip can be
- How strong the cord needs to be
- How tightly beads must be secured
- What materials are allowed
- Whether it can handle being yanked at 3am by a furious newborn
Basically, things you would never think about until you learn the hard way.
How to avoid the mistake!
Here's a checklist for the parents to actually use:
- Make sure it's safety tested - If the brand doesn't even mention anything about safety then you already have your anwser.
- Check the materials - Food-grade silicone, smooth beechwood, secure cord. Not just any random plastic beads from who knows where.
- Look for UK based or legit makers - They follow the proper rules (usually because they're parents themselves and understand how important it is)
- Pretty is good. Safe is non negotiable! - They could be most beautiful dummy/pacifier clips but it means nothing if bead can pop off.
What we've learned at Newly Born
Dummy / Pacifier clips are what started everything for us.
From our daughter dropping her dummy every two minutes to us now running a business which sells thousands of pacifier clips!
So we don't rush these things.
We check every clip.
We pull test them.
We reject any that feel 'off' even the slightest.
If we wouldn't use it for our own kids, then it definitely won't be leaving our warehouse. End of story.
Dummy clips are meant to make your day easier, not give you another thing to stress about, so choose wisely!
